Local Option Sales Tax Helps Revitalize Miralla Park

A One-Cent Investment Brings New Life to a Cordova Park Neighborhood Gathering Place

Families, children, and neighbors visiting Miralla Park are enjoying a safer, more welcoming experience thanks to improvements completed in late 2025 and funded through Escambia County's Local Option Sales Tax (L.O.S.T.). Located on Connell Drive in Pensacola, Miralla Park has long served as a neighborhood gathering place for recreation, play and outdoor activities. Recent upgrades are helping ensure the park continues to serve residents for years to come.

Funded by the one-cent Local Option Sales Tax approved by Escambia County voters, the project focused on restoring and modernizing several of the park's most-used amenities. Improvements included upgrading and restoring playground surfacing, restoring aging playground equipment components, upgrading the swing set and reconfiguring park benches to better serve visitors.

Accessibility was also a key focus of the project. Sidewalk improvements were made to provide better access to playgrounds and other park amenities, making it easier for residents of all ages and abilities to enjoy the space. New trash receptacles were also installed, helping keep the park cleaner and more inviting for everyone.

While some LOST-funded projects involve major roads, drainage systems, or public facilities, investments in neighborhood parks often have an immediate impact on quality of life. Parks like Miralla provide places for children to play, neighbors to connect and families to spend time outdoors close to home. Maintaining these community spaces helps preserve the character and livability of Pensacola's neighborhoods.

Since voters first approved the Local Option Sales Tax in 1992, the program has funded hundreds of projects throughout Escambia County and the City of Pensacola. The improvements at Miralla Park show how a single penny invested locally continues to enhance public spaces, improve accessibility and support the everyday experiences of residents across the community.
